As I re-packed my suitcase, and dealt with all expected and unexpected fiascos (thank you, power outages at sunset), I decided to become a tutor in all things Italian. Now, keep in mind that I am severely under qualified to do this, but I do have a list of tips given to me by all my favorite people, and a few of things I’ve learned while here.
Best places to eat:
- La Prosciuterria de Trevi – the restaurant itself is very cool, and the people there are very cool. Also, they are pretty.
- Lost Food Factory – not only for the amazing food (get the juice, get the juice!), but the people there speak excellent English and are hilarious
- Naumachia – the pizza, get the pizza.
- Settembrini – I DIDN’T KNOW IT WAS A LIBRARY, TOO
- Flavio al Velavevodetto – pastaaaaaaaaaa
Coolest things to see:
- Palantine Hill
- Largo di Torre Argentina
- Foro Romani
- Fontana di Trevi – go early. just. Go early.
Miscellaneous:
- Hit up local supermarkets – they have the coolest snacks – including, and especially, lots and lots of bread snacks.
- You don’t have to order all three courses. It’s amazing, but you don’t have to. I did not know this for far too long.
- People watch because tourists are amazing.
- Get a metro pass – they come in 24/48/72 hour and week-long passes
- Carry cash and change – most places will only accept cash
- Stand still on the right side of escalators, so that people can move along the left side
- Be prepared to jaywalk
- Learn at least a few words of Italian
- Pickpockets are not on every street corner. Be careful, but it’s not that much of a problem.
- Bring me with you if you go to Rome.
