The one where I move in

September 7, 2016

Since I have come to Europe, my bag has not grown much heavier, but my suitcase is swelling nonetheless. This proves problematic when I have to lift my suitcase onto luggage racks far too many times – trains, buses, and the like.

Despite this, I still have about 80 Tesco runs to do. I’m sure I could cut down on this number, but somehow, every time I make it down (or across or whatever) to the Tesco, my shopping list is somehow ripped up or forgotten, or I look at the prices and panic.

In between these Tesco runs, I have actually managed to participate in university activities – primarily the ones with free food, but they still involved socializing, so they count.

The best activities thus far:

  • Clan Warfare – I completely lost my voice, got adopted (not legally, but academically, which is basically the same thing), and found out that you can survive an avalanche of people falling on you. Also, the drunk people at clan warfare do not discriminate, nor are they humble. I apparently have met Britain’s best chef, who also happens to be 18.
  • The baking society’s beach gathering – the food was amazing, and all members were game to me not-so-subtly asking them to cut open the beautifully untouched fruit tart
  • McIntosh Hall’s cocktail party – the night ended up with me wandering around barefoot and completely sober, while discussing different versions of Monopoly and analyzing Buffy’s plotlines versus Gilmore Girls’s plotlines
  • Ice cream crawl – whilst the rest of my floor explored the various pubs all over St. Andrews, a group of us found ice cream to cool us down in the 60 degree weather, and then hit up the beach for some good old-fashioned ice breakers. There were also bunnies. Randomly. Random bunnies on the beach. It was magical.

Although there are probably more activities that I’ve forgotten about in the vast lengths of time I’ve been here (5 days), there are a few that I did manage to miss out on:

  • Clay pigeon shooting – we arrived 15 minutes late and think we missed the bus to go wherever they’re allowed to shoot stuff
  • Mark Wahlberg. Apparently, he was here. I was laying in bed contemplating why my friend’s room had fancy molding and mine didn’t.
  • The ceilidh – I missed out on tickets, but fortunately I have the Great British Bake-Off tonight to tide me over. Unless I miss that.
